Austrian Cultural Forum, 11 East 52nd Street, New York, NY

EXHIBITION EXHIBITION MARIT WOLTERS: EVERYTHING THAT IS SOLID DISSOLVES INTO AIR WEDNESDAY JUN 20 - MONDAY SEP 03 The Austrian Cultural Forum New York, in collaboration with studio das weisse haus and Erste Bank, is pleased to present its summer art installation Everything That Is Solid Dissolves Into Air by Erste Bank ExtraVALUE Art Award recipient Marit Wolters. On display from June 20 to September 3, 2018, Everything That Is Solid Dissolves Into Air envisions an optimistic image of our society while inviting us to reflect on the transformative potential established by the relational processes stemming from social issues such as migration.   By breaking up standardized methods of processing and assembling materials, the Vienna-based artist Marit Wolters questions the relation we have with the structures that constitute our society. Architecture decisively influences our behavior, our feelings and the way we perceive life. Its structures provide information on social ideas, processes and functional mechanisms. For her solo exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, Wolters uses materials that are known from the construction industry: Aerated concrete sculptures and reinforced steel structures are created in a dialectic process of assembly and disassembly, demolding and reformulation. Her processual work allows the possibility of failure as a method of development and constitution. In her sculptures the potential of collapsing is present, sometimes endured, often exploited, in order to make new assemblages possible. What is assumed and perceived as stable becomes fragile and fragmentary, a metaphor of our time. ABOUT MARIT WOLTERS Marit Wolters (born 1985, Achim, Germany) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Dresden and the University of Applied Arts, Vienna. She has received several awards and grants from institutions such as the DAAD, the Syn Foundation, and the Republic of Austria. Her work has been exhibited internationally including shows at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation; Hamburger Bahnhof; Staatliche Museen zu Berlin; Sculpture Park, Joanneum Graz; Academy of Science in Halle; Krinzinger Projekte, Vienna. Wolters lives and works in Vienna.   ABOUT THE ExtraVALUE ART AWARD A collaboration between Austrian residence and studio program studio das weisse haus, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, and Erste Bank, the Erste Bank ExtraVALUE Art Award was initiated in 2016 with the aim to promote a young artist and facilitate a one-month residency in New York as a phase of inspiration and to expand their network. Actress and comedian Janeane Garofalo has been an American institution since she burst on the scene in 1992. Janeane has had many memorable and critically acclaimed roles in films such as "The Truth About Cats and Dogs," "Wet Hot American Summer," "Ratatouille," "Steal This Movie," "Reality Bites," "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion," "Mystery Men," "The Ten" and "The Cable Guy". Janeane also co-authored the best seller "Feel This Book," with Ben Stiller. Janeane was a cast member of the Emmy Award-winning Ben Stiller Show and played the role of Paula, the acerbic talent booker, on "The Larry Sanders Show," for which she received an Emmy nomination. During the fall of '94 she joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live." Some of Janeane's other television work includes two specials for HBO, FOX's "24," "Mad About You," and the final season of NBC's "The West Wing," where she played Democratic campaign strategist Louise Thornton. In addition to acting in film and television, Janeane is an outspoken activist, spoken word performer and stand-up comedy entertainer known and respected around the world. She was instrumental in the successful launching of the first liberal radio network, Air America Radio, where she hosted her own talk show, "The Majority Report." A lightning rod for controversy, Janeane's well informed opinions and unflinching honesty have inspired laughs, as well as striking a chord with the left, right and everyone in between. Stand-up comedy has been Judah's main thing since he first started in 1989. His onstage persona of The World Champion has taken on different shades over the years. It was initially a satire on narcissism & braggarts. Then the persona morphed into being a real life superhero (who is actually humble) subliminally getting audiences to question why we have heroes. For the past several years & currently, Judah's act has been predominantly satirizing American exceptionalism as well U.S. domestic and foreign policy. The World Champion is a champion of the world - who stands up for earth's rights and the people, animals, and plants of the planet. If America does the right thing, Judah will be the next president of the United States. Judah has a stand-up special & album coming out soon. Rotary Metro NYC & friends have loved getting to know the intelligent, ambitious, hard-working teens in CAMBA's Collegiate Express Program. CEs primary goal is for every child to reach and succeed in college with a college-readiness program that targets low- and moderate -income 9th & 10th grade students. It employs proven strategies to improve high school academics, attendance and graduation; and college attendance and graduation. RCMNYC has has worked with students on career paths, CVs, and interview skills. Many of the students are working towards STEM careers. They also rarely get a chance to leave their Brooklyn neighborhood - many have not had the opportunity to explore museums and the culture available throughout the city. We want to provide them with educational, inspirational experiences this summer. We want to take the CAMBA teens to the Museum of Natural History, where they will see exhibits, meet MNH scientists, and see the planetarium show. RCMNYC is also hoping to take the group to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tenement Museum, and/or a class at the Makery in 3D printing. Every dollar helps fund a inspiring, eye-opening experience for a NYC teenager. Please donate!
