Before today there was yesterday and after tomorrow is the future. Elyte and Cnyce ́s paths were crossed for all time when a Sun Ra light beam sent from Saturn collided with the P-Funk Mothership and sent them tumbling to earth. Now, Soul Clap time travels on a musical spaceship of dopeness... The early years As children on earth, they were driven to understand the history of dance music and found their teacher in original boston disco DJ Caril Mitro who admitted them into the temple of Vinyl Connection (whose members included Dimitri From Paris and Frankie Knuckles plus many more). Caril taught Soul Clap that "house wears many hats" and instilled the sounds of American dance music while fostering an addiction to digging that has become a worldwide quest to acquire the best vinyl. Soul Clap ́s training goes beyond history lessons to mastering all the elements of the DJ: knowledge, mixing, programming, performance and experience. In between With their roots firmly planted in their hometown of Boston, Soul Clap went out into the world to perform at places like The Marcy Hotel, Fabric, The Electric Pickle and Bar25 and in smaller places in America, Europe, Japan, Mars and Jupiter plus dancefloors in other galaxies that you haven ́t heard of. They blasted into space with a series of game changing edits (including the summer 2010 anthem Extravaganza), originals (Action/Satisfaction & Lonely C) and remixes (for Laid Back, Metronomy, Little Dragon, Robert Owens, DJ Harvey and more). They joined forces with Wolf + Lamb to mix a chapter of the legendary DJ Kicks series and broke musical ground on a two month world tour of 6+ hour DJ sets. They always believe in sharing the knowledge by teaching college courses, doing workshops, speaking on panels and making sure to include forgotten classics in their epic DJ sets. The future By harnessing the past Soul Clap looks to the future. In 2012 they released their debut long player, EFUNK: The Album. A culmination of their sonic influences so far, full of collaborations and programmed to listen to on one vinyl LP, it included a cover version of Egyptian Lover’s classic Alezby Inn, which got the seal of approval from Egypt himself in the form of a remix due out in 2013. Pushing their musical message even deeper, Soul Clap proudly launched Soul Clap Records, a sounding board for original material, a framework for their own funky family and a spotlight on undiscovered talent from their hometown of Boston and beyond. To keep the vinyl torch burning the label features vinyl only tracks and limited 7” records, as a matter of...

Aaron Davis Hall, West 135th Street & Convent Avenue, 129 Convent Avenue, New York, NY

Back by popular demand, On Kentucky Avenue: A Celebration of Atlantic City’s Historic Club Harlem returns to Aaron Davis Hall on Thursday, July 12, for a three-week encore engagement. The show, which shines a red-hot spotlight on a little-known piece of Black history, is presented by the City College Center for the Arts (CCCA). Called “one of New York’s most magical and electric shows” by Broadway After Dark, the musical is fictional but inspired by real people in a real place: Kentucky Avenue, the center of Black night life in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Summers were hot, not only because of the balmy beach weather but also by virtue of the sizzling music and dance emanating from the clubs on the block. The most famous spot of all was Club Harlem, named in honor of the genre of Black live entertainment that was fast-paced, jazzy and pulsating, with dancers, singers, elegant showgirls, comedians and specialty acts. Performers at the “Black Copacabana” included Ella Fitzgerald, Richard Pryor, Sammy Davis Jr., Nancy Wilson, Billy Daniels, Moms Mabley, Duke Ellington, Slappy White, Sarah Vaughan and the Temptations, but headliners from neighboring clubs would often stop by for Club Harlem’s 5 a.m. show—renowned entertainers like Frank Sinatra, Milton Berle, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The setting is the 1969 season opening night dress rehearsal.  A love triangle is revealed between impresario Ivan King (Ty Stephens), his lead showgirl Betty Jo Stanton (N'Kenge) and her best friend the featured female vocalist *Pauline Pierce (Andricka Hall) *(This role is performed one night by (Ramona Dunlap) With Lee Summer now sharing the director's chair with Adam Wade, the writers continue to develop this show knowing there is always going to be trouble when change is coming.  “On Kentucky Avenue is a fitting experience in Aaron Davis Hall given its history and CCCA’s mission. Many of the artists who performed at Club Harlem entertained audiences at Aaron Davis Hall, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson and Chuck Jackson,” said CCCA Managing Director Gregory Shanck. “In fact, Ella Fitzgerald, along with Mikhail Baryshnikov and others, performed at the opening of the building.” On Kentucky Avenue is produced by Adam Wade. Scenic design is by Ty Stephens, Piero Ramos and Yvette Spellman, choreography by Ty Stephens and swing choreographer and tap consulting by Mickey Davidson, costume design by Pearl Williams and Ty Stephens and music direction by Richard Cummings, Jr. On Kentucky Avenue features ’60s chart-topping music plus an original score true to the era by Ty...

    FRIDAY

LIC-A Plaxall Gallery, 5-25 46th Avenue, Long Island City, NY

THIS PRODUCTION, WRITTEN BY AARON POSNER, TAKES US DEEP INTO CHEKHOV'S CATHARTIC LOVE QUADRANGLE AS IT ATTEMPTS TO DISCOVER, WITH META-THEATRICALITY, WHAT IT TRULY MEANS TO BE AN ARTIST, AND WHAT IT TRULY MEANS TO LOVE. (New York, NY) - Stripped Scripts® ("Tomorrow In The Battle, an Ars Nova Fling), in association with Long Island City Artists Inc. and The Plaxall Gallery ("Garden Of Delights"), has announced that it will present Aaron Posner's STUPID F##KING BIRD, a satirical spin on the Chekhov's classic text, "The Seagull", directed by Adam Knight ("In The Room, "Naperville"), running July 6th - July 21st, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at The Plaxall Gallery (5-25 46 Avenue, Long Island City). www.strippedscripts.com The play, written by Aaron Posner, reimagines Chekhov's classic text as a contemporary artist's journey attempting to find new forms of art by living in this present moment. The characters' stories are at once hysterical, tragic and cathartic as they desperately attempt to find out what it means to be an artist. This meta-theatrical experience, grounded in the disappointment inherent in growing up in the world we live in today, asks the question: Art, Love Happiness can we have it all? LIC-A will curate a LIC-A member's exhibition specifically themed to Stripped Scripts®' Stupid F##king Bird titled Yours, And Always, Only Yours. The exhibition will take place in The Plaxall Gallery's 12,000 sq ft warehouse space. This unique artistic experience will couple visual art with Aaron Posner's dynamic play, Stupid F##king Bird. Yours, And Always, Only Yours will open on July 5th, and will be on view until August 5th. Gallery hours: Thursday from 6pm-10pm, Saturday and Sunday from 12pm-6pm. The cast of STUPID F##KING BIRD features OLIVIER RENAUD (Cirque Du Soleil), JAY WILLIAM THOMAS ("Dementia 13"), MARY RUTH BAGGOTT ("Brokers"), TANA SIROIS ("Broad Comedy"), DAVID LEEPER ("At The Flash"), ALLISON THREADGOLD ("Tomorrow In The Battle") AND DONAL BROPHY ("Sleep No More"). AARON POSNER (Playwright) is an American playwright, theatre director, and co-founder of the Arden Theatre Company in Philadelphia. He has previously adapted The Chosen based on a novel of the same name, My Name Is Asher Lev, based on Potok's 1972 novel. 8 PM
ISSUE Project Room, 22 Boerum Place, Brooklyn, NY

Friday, July 20th, ISSUE presents the first evening of a two day series observing the legacy of late 60s-early 70s experimental music collective the Sonic Arts Union and its founding members: David Behrman, Alvin Lucier, Gordon Mumma, and the late Robert Ashley (1930-2014). The series intersects the groups extensive individual performative histories with ISSUE and celebrates Sonic Arts Unions role in pioneering many practices that have since become essential to experimental performance in the United States, including the use of live electronics, homemade instruments, and multimedia presentations. The July 20th program features newer works penned by the collective, performed by friends and collaborators including Oren Ambarchi, Steven OMalley, Bernhard Rietbrock, Jan Thoben, Joseph Kubera, Gelsey Bell, Aliza Simons, Dave Ruder, Trevor Saint, John King and Cleek Schrey. The evening features the world premiere of Alvin Luciers Double Helix for four guitars, his second ever piece written exclusively for the instrument. The piece is performed by composer and multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi and doom-metal legend of Sunn O)))) Stephen OMalley, who together gave the NY premiere of Luciers Criss-Cross at ISSUE in 2014, and additionally features Ever Present Orchestra director Bernhard Rietbrock and sound studies lecturer Jan Thoben to complete the quartet. Later in the program, glockenspiel performer Trevor Saint follows his exceptional performance of Luciers Richochet Lady at ISSUE in 2017 with the premiere of Tilted Arc, a new piece written by Lucier this year featuring bowed glockenspeil and pure wave oscillators. Additionally, Gordon Mumma and leading interpreter of contemporary music Joseph Kubera stage Mummas 2006 composition From the Rendition Series, which combines piano and electronics with newly evolving construction-set procedures. Mumma, who rarely stages his work live, accompanies Kubera with electronics -- an incredibly rare opportunity to witness Mumma performatively engaging his compositions. Vocalist Gelsey Bell then stages a recent 3-person arrangement of the late Robert Ashleys 1993 work Love Is A Good Example featuring Aliza Simons and Dave Ruder. Wide-ranging in its subject matter, from physics to schizophrenia, the piece features a title phrase interrupted by varying, often humorous intonations of the word sure. The evening concludes with David Behrmans Long Throw performed by Joseph Kubera, John King, Cleek Schrey and Behrman himself. The piece was one of three works by three composers commissioned by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company...

    8 PM
Baby's All Right 146 Broadway Brooklyn NY

Pearl Charles lives in the moment, seeking excitement whether it leads her down a dark, dusty road or into the arms of a trouble-making lover. Her full-length debut album, Sleepless Dreamer, describes late night revelry, love affairs, running away and running towards, serenading the sunrise through whirlwind stories of her native Los Angeles, the city, the canyon, the desert, and the road. On a quest to discover the truest version of herself, Charles embraces the feeling of not being settled, a person who always restlessly wants more from life and is willing chase it, wherever it may lead her. Sleepless Dreamer finds her soulful, often sultry voice gliding through songs tinged with cosmic Americana, a little disco, some classic rock & roll, and a whole lot of that smooth AM gold. Passion, psychedelics and heartbreak inform the highs and lows she rides through the album. Finally able to see clearly through the smoke and mirrors of her surroundings, Charles departs on a consequent journey of questioning and soul-searching, eventually hitting the road in the inevitable search for answers. As heard in the title track, themes of disillusionment and subsequent realization run through to the album. Examined through the lens of relationships, whether it be the one between her and a lover, a friend, a city, the road, the world, or perhaps most importantly, herself, each experiences helps to shape her developing perspective and worldview. On “All The Boys,” she contemplates the cyclical nature of toxic attraction. Funky stand-out “Night Tides” looks at the illusion a person presents in the beginning of a romance, only to reveal their true colors once they’ve lured you in. She recognizes the pattern of being drawn to a tempting yet toxic muse over and over, but admits it fuels her creatively. While many of the songs revolve around romance, they are juxtaposed with more existential/philosophical tracks like “Ghost” and “Only In America”, examining the meaning of life and what plagues her generation of disaffected youth. Arriving January 2018 on Kanine Records, Sleepless Dreamer was produced and engineered by Kenny Woods (formerly of Beck) at the Haas Brothers studio in West Adams, CA. After working together on some covers for Aquarium Drunkard’s Lagniappe Sessions series last summer, Charles knew Woods was the right person to collaborate with on her full-length album. Enlisting an all-star band of friends, the album features the work of Father John Misty’s Chris Dixie Darley (guitar), Dan Bailey (drums), Eli Thompson (bass), and David Vandervelde (guitar), Darian...
